Use... rich colours

Introduce spicy shades and dusky tones to warm things up

* BRING SOME HEAT Homes can start to feel chilly as autumn draws near, but a few easy seasonal switches can up the cosiness factor instantly. Look to rich, earthy shades like burnt orange, cinnamon and ginger to bring extra heat to room schemes. Swap cushions, bedding and soft furnishings, bringing in richer accent colours to spice things up.

* DRENCH WITH COLOUR Rich shades are perfect for rooms that you retreat to at the end of the day, such as bedrooms, living rooms and snugs. Try a colour-drenched scheme if you want the room to feel super-cosy and cocooning, painting walls, woodwork and ceiling the same rich shade throughout to create an immersive and more intimate mood.

* ADD CONTRAST Warm colours can feel quite intense, so pairing them with a cooler contrasting hue is a great way to bring balance to a scheme. Pick shades that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel - such as teal and burnt orange - the two colours make a striking combination, with teal bringing calm to the fieriness of orange.

* FOCUS ON FURNITURE Your choice of furniture has a big impact on cosiness levels of areas such as bedrooms and living rooms. Hero pieces such as beds, sofas and armchairs are key, so ring the changes by investing in plush statement furniture with upholstery in a standout colour, bold pattern or sumptuous fabric to give tired rooms a fresh focus.

Use... tactile textures

Hunker down with lots of inviting cosy layers and feel-good fabrics
