Snap a picture
Want to do an online search to find out the value of an item, but don't know enough about it to type in a description? "Taking photos of items can be a great place to start," says George Higby, accredited appraiser, antiques dealer and host of the YouTube show "The Antique Nomad." Just download the free Google Lens app to your smartphone, then use it to snap a picture of your item. Or use Google Images to try to find similar items, says Higby. Log on to Images. Google.com, tap the camera button, then select a photo from your computer. Google will scour the web for similar images (including at online stores and auction sites) and display its findings. Click through those that match what you have to get more details about it. In many cases, you'll discover how much it's being sold for and how much buyers paid for it at auction, giving you an idea of its worth.
