Our travels begin in Strathalbyn, the gateway town to South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula where Sally and Rory McGregor have made their home. Then we travel to Geelong in Victoria where author Fiona Lowe lives and works. We chat about her writing career and latest novel, The Accident, her passions for cycling, baking and entering her cakes in country shows. We also head to Rylstone in the NSW Central West, where the Evans family has created not one, but two amazing gardens on their farm, and up to the NSW MidNorth, where the residents of Wherrol Flat and Caparra create an annual roadside scarecrow trail for the amusement of passers-by and as part of an October long weekend fair that raises funds for the local hall. Then we hop over to Tasmania’s north-east, where we visit Ken Richards and Garry Harris at their mid-19th century Kilgour House in the village of Longford. Next stop is the Yarra Valley in Victoria, where Tinne and Pieter Van Beeck have created their home and stunning accommodation options called Glenlowren. We also head to Rylstone in the NSW Central West, where the Evans family has created not one, but two amazing gardens on their farm. Our travel feature takes a bucket-list trip through the Red Centre from Alice Springs to Uluru via the West MacDonnell Ranges and Kings Canyon. On the road again, we head to central-western Queensland where Milynda Rogers, a talented self-taught sculptor, has created a 200-kilometre-long sculpture trail that has put the tiny outback town of Aramac on the map. We start in Alice Springs where we meet retired nurse Deanna Bitar and her husband Samih at the extraordinary home they’ve owner-built on a hill overlooking the beautiful Macdonnell Ranges. Our travels then head to Victoria where we visit a gorgeous garden at Tatong and the house Janelle Marsden built overlooking the vines of Porepunkah’s Feathertop Winery, both in the north-east of the state. We then venture south to Willow Grove in the foothills of the Baw Baw Ranges for a heartwarming story about how the collaboration of two women has injected new energy into their businesses as well as fresh perspective on their personal lives. Our travel story covers the Great Ocean Road and we also visit Tasmania for a profile on restaurateur and fragrance-company founder Hayley Self. Our next issue’s travels started in the very centre of Australia where we met Jan Heaslip, matriarch of Bond Springs station near Alice Springs. Jan has called the station home for almost 60 years and has been a passionate advocate for education for bush children for all of that time. She’s weathered all the challenges of remote living from drought and fire to floods and accidents. We also travelled to western Queensland where Erika and David Marsh and their family welcomed us to their home on a cattle station, then to the South Australian coastal town of Victor Harbor where we caught up with old friends Tania and Keith Norman, whose previous home at Encounter Bay and houseboat on the Murray River were featured in the magazine. Our travel story is a road trip up the Western Australian coast and our Australian abroad is Caroline Gabriel, who runs a bed and breakfast in Delhi, India. Our travels start in western Queensland where tour operators Alan and Sue Smith welcome us to their historic homestead on Rosebank station. Back on the coast, there’s a story about a family who live and work at Montville in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, while in NSW we visit the stunning garden Lucy and Richard Marshall have created at Merribee in the Shoalhaven region. The Australian abroad is Douglas Blain, who has been responsible for the restoration of a brace of boutique hotels in London as well as several historic properties in his home state of Tasmania. Our travels start in the NSW Southern Tablelands where we meet Sue Collings at her home that combines a cottage built during the influenza pandemic of 1918 with a barn added during the Covid crisis of 2020. We also visit artist James Gulliver Hancock and his partner, musician and co-director of Berry’s OpenField festival, Lenka Kripac, at their house in the bush at Brogers Creek in the NSW Illawarra region. There’s also a wonderful home at Paradise in WA’s south-west and an extraordinary 1880s house and garden at Crafers in SA’s Adelaide Hills. Our travel story takes us on a road trip through NSW, there’s a peek inside landscape architect Michael Bligh’s own garden at his home on the outskirts of Goulburn in the NSW Southern Highlands, and our Australian abroad story introduces avalanche technician Matt O’Rourke, who grew up in Cooma but these days lives at the Canadian ski resort of Whistler with his “hero” rescue dog, Eva. This issue's travels start in the NSW central west, where we were lucky enough to visit food entrepreneur Simmone Logue at her home near Oberon, during which she prepared a lunch inspired by local produce. From there, we headed to South Australia where we visited a homestead and garden in the Coonawarra region and went on a road trip across Kangaroo Island. In Tasmania, we caught up with Alistair and Kerry Houston, who run the Ship Inn in Stanley and have painstakingly restored a stone former bond store as their home. Our Australian Abroad welcomes guests to her art workshops in France and we’ve a profile on a young family who have made a brave move to the bush. In South Australia, we caught up with Jane Doole at yet another beautiful gardenesque setting at Willunga in the McLaren Vale wine district. We’ve also stories from Rutherglen, another wonderful wine-producing region, in Victoria’s north-east. Our service feature covers all the ways to keep warm for winter.
