Welcome to Issue 15 of Design Anthology, our annual year-end edition with a distinctively international flavour. 

The D/A team has rounded up features that cross borders far and as wide.  Along with our usual line-up of new hotel openings, we bring you an assemblage of features on galleries, artists and curators and a stellar line-up of homes for you that may well be some of my personal favourites to date, including a multiple award-winning architectural marvel in Sydney built for a prominent art collector, a quirky and very personal home in Manila, a restored Neo-Grec beauty on New York’s Upper East Side, a warm and soulful residence in London and a Shenzhen apartment displaying a strong European influence.

Our new issue, helmed by editors-in-chief Simone Schultz and Jeremy Smart, delivers a global tour of the most interesting new design, style, travel, art and architecture stories from Asia Pacific and beyond

Introducing issue 38, our 10-year anniversary issue. In this issue, we spend a day with David Caon, meet Vikram Goyal, take a tour of A Place Where in Kuala Lumpur and sit down with The Naive Side. We explore the future of textile design, sit down with Jerome Lorico and visit Soil Setoda in Japan. We also visit Shinta Mani Mustang in Nepal, explore the world of lacquer and tour homes in Singapore, Mumbai, Hong Kong, Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. Finally, we get to know Bijoy Jain, visit BAR Studio’s new home and remember the life and work of the late Eko Prawoto.

For the first time in Design Anthology’s ten-year history, we’ve dedicated an entire print issue to Japan and the people at the heart of its creative community: the designers, architects, craftspeople, makers and more. Issue 37 is filled with stories, spaces and sojourns across the island nation, featuring homes in Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka, a design-minded tour of Hiroshima, creative spaces in Kyoto and Kobe and so much more.

Introducing a renewed and reinvigorated Design Anthology. Launched officially during Salone del Mobile in 2023, issue 36 of the flagship Asia Pacific edition delivers a fresh visual approach while maintaining the same founding spirit. Design Anthology continues to tell stories of the emerging and established, enterprising and enduring across Asia Pacific to a global audience of the clued-in and curious.

Since the founding of Design Anthology, the team has made numerous trips to Singapore, whether to meet the city-state’s most interesting emerging designers, architects, makers, writers, photographers and illustrators, or to visit a new hotel, F&B project or old friends. It’s a town full of talent, but one that hasn’t always been given the recognition it deserves for its creative and cultural endeavours. This year, we aim to change that. These many relationships and discoveries have culminated in our first special issue dedicated just to Singaporean design, craft and culture.

Arriving in June, this special issue is packed to the brim with breezy homes from Bangkok to Bali, stories exploring the built environment across Asia and beyond and introductions to pioneering designers and makers working throughout the region today.

In this globe-trotting international special, we’ve researched and reported on the best design stories from around the world.

Each year we dedicate an entire issue to one country. This year we’re casting our curatorial eye over the world’s largest archipelago, the fourth most populous country and the fourteenth-largest in terms of overall land area — Indonesia. The aim with our annual editions is to shine a light on a country within the region that’s under-represented and underappreciated from a design perspective. And there are likely not many more deserving than Indonesia.

Among the line-up of features in this issue that you can enjoy from the comfort of your armchair are the latest happenings from Semarang, Singapore, Jakarta and Seoul — and that’s just our Dossier section. Also, don’t miss the excerpt of an interview with legendary Japanese designer Kenya Hara. You’ll find the rest of the conversation on our website. We’re excited to report on the growing trend — of which we wholeheartedly approve — of heritage properties in China being restored and redeveloped into luxury hotels, from villa homes in Jiangxi province relocated to the outskirts of Shanghai to a 1960s sugar mill that’s been converted into a riverside retreat in Yangshuo, and more.
Speaking of restorations, our regular contributor Samantha Leese reports on a unique arts and culture project on the outskirts of Manila that has relocated a handful of historic buildings from another time to a charming seaside location, and Aaina Bhargava shares with us India’s first sculpture park in the province of Rajasthan — an area better known for camels and ancient forts than its art. And what would our summer issue be without a stellar line-up of homes? You’ll be booking tickets to Bali as soon as you see the Studio Jencquel project in Ubud, photographed by Edmon Leong. Aside from the Ubud retreat, we hope you enjoy the unique homes in Noosa, Los Angeles, Vũng Tàu and Hua Hin. Welcome to our first issue for 2018 — our annual crossover issue. This year's is dedicated to design and fashion, and what happens when the two worlds collide. Plus, we bring you the sensational homes of five fashion luminaries from around the world.

Welcome to our September issue, the annual edition dedicated entirely to covering the creative scene in one country — and this year it’s Thailand. It’s no secret that this is a country made up of talented creative people who are equally warm and welcoming. (What’s less known is that 70 per cent of current architecture graduates in Thailand are female.) Needless to say, this has been a fun issue to research and compile.

The annual pilgrimage the international design community makes for Milan’s Salone del Mobile and Design Week is unlike any other. Over 370,000 visitors pour into the city each March for the Fiera alone, not to mention the increasingly important satellite events that spread across the city.  

Each year the event seems to be even bigger and more spread out than the last, forcing journalists and editors like myself to literally run between events, appointments and interviews. Spending time in the back of taxis or squeezed into metro cars though can mean missing out on one of the simple pleasures of Milan – la passeggiata. The relatively small and intimate city is truly best experienced by foot, and especially so during the pleasant spring weather we were blessed with this year.

Our coverage of Salone del Mobile and Milan’s Design Week will be spread between our website and a new section we’re introducing to the magazine, entitled Fiera, where we will showcase our edit of the world’s best design fairs. We hope you’ll enjoy!

In addition, this issue — our annual Summer edition — features a handful of homes in lust-worthy tropical and seaside locations, including Sydney, Bali, Hong Kong, Mumbai and Phuket. And for those of you in need of vacation inspiration, our Wanderlust section features a selection of exotic destinations, the highlight being the new Bill Bensley-designed JW Marriott in Phu Quoc, Vietnam.

This issue of Design Anthology officially marks our three-year anniversary, and what better way to mark the occasion than by celebrating — with food!

There’s no doubt that in recent years food has been elevated far beyond mere sustenance, and chefs have become the new rock stars. In this issue, we celebrate food in all its glory, from the spaces where we cook and eat to food’s crossover with art and design.
