2021 has started with a bang as an Indian startup entered the Unicorn Club and Nykaa, the Indian beauty e-tailer reportedly announcing its plans to go public by the end of 2022 at a valuation of USD 3 Bilion or more. Not just that, Enrich Salons, India’s most leading salon chain recently appointed Vivek Bali as CEO. Vivek brings a huge FMCG experience thats likely to catapult the company into a league of its iown in India. Does that imply the cosmetic industry, as a whole, is thriving in India? We will be back with a deeper evaluation soon.

The Health and Family Welfare Ministry has proposed the draft amendment to the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements Act, 1954), with a stringent punishment of a jail term of up to five years and a fine of up to INR50 lakh for advertisements for magic remedies and drugs promoting fair skin, premature ageing and greying of hair among others — the three aspects that are top of mind in our business.

Well, the biggest news as the year ended came from L’Oréal - ‘L’Oréal will open a school dedicated to hairdressing in the beginning of 2020, offering the first bachelor’s degree in “entrepreneurial hairdressing”- whilst this will be in Paris, there’s definitely a throwback to the initiatives taken by the L’Oréal Professionel Products Division in India with respect to professional education in hairdressing including the ARTH certificates.

As the season turns and we approach the year-end, we look back at the journey that Indian salon and beauty industry has had. Yet another successful Salon Management Congress (SMC) in Mumbai gives us encouragement that growth is well on its way. As our eminent panellists and speakers at SMC dwelled on various aspects of Salon Business, the best practices book just shaped up.

International Women’s Day was established to strengthen the cause of gender equality but sadly it has fizzled down to social media posts and forwarded messages. We, at Beauty Launchpad, decided to present a bi-sectional view of the concepts of gender equality and beauty with our special feature – Of Captain Marvels and Wonder Women.

This month we have trained our eyes on the skincare segment of the Indian salon industry. Although its a known fact that the industry is growing rapidly, the disparity between the hair and skin segment is vast. This reality is changing but at a slow and steady pace. We see facial bars popping up across the country, but it is hard to term it as a trend. For us, skin is still secondary, albeit an important, part of the salon business.

December is the month for taking stock – for the achievements of the year, the setbacks, the strategies and of course, the bottom line. We at Beauty Launchpad have been following the salon and beauty industries closely this entire year and our overview of it is quite positive. We saw established brands adding on to their portfolios with products and services that are trending the world over.

I can’t believe 2018 is drawing to a close already! Wasn’t it just yesterday
that we were charting out plans for the year, asking experts on how the beauty segment will fare in 2018 and planning our editorial calendar to feature the best of the Indian salon industry? But nostalgia is fast forwarding me here. We still have a month ahead of us – a business-heavy, revenue-driven, bottom-line-impacting month.

with Professional Beauty Expo, to conduct the third edition of the Salon Management Congress (SMC) in Mumbai.

The Indian salon industry is becoming a global potpourri. There was a time when hairdressers travelled the world to learn trends and techniques. Today, global experts are coming to India to showcase their works. Education, expert advice, technical assistance and product sourcing – everything is a few clicks away.

The International SPA Association (ISPA) has released its annual findings of five key spa industry financial indicators for the market in USA. Compiled by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), the initial report is known as the ‘Big Five’, comprising total revenue, spa visits, spa
locations, revenue per visit and number of employees for the
United States spa industry.

There is no doubting the fact that the Indian salon industry is on a boom path. If speculations and business forecast are to be believed, the industry will stand at approximately Rs.322 billion by 2020. This growth will encompass hairdressing, skincare, make-up and wellness.

I am thrilled to announce to you the successful completion of the Salon Management Congress (SMC) at Professional Beauty Expo in New Delhi. It was the second edition for SMC but a first for the capital! We had an amazing line-up of speakers, from Anand Mohan Jha of NSDC and Nayana Karunaratne from Sri Lanka to Asha Hariharan, Dr Bharti Taneja, CK Kumarvel, Pammy and Veer Kaul and Jawed Habib amongst many others. The topics that were discussed at SMC encompassed various aspects of the salon business such as scaling up, skill development, hygiene and sanitation, specialisation, sustainability and much more.

Just when I thought summer is boiling down to an anti-climactic end, things are thrown back in top spin. We, at Beauté Espace headquarters, are gearing up for the second edition of the Salon Management Congress (SMC)... this time in New Delhi. With top experts from the industry gracing various panel discussions, we will be covering a plethora of topics from scaling up and expanding footprint to hygiene and sanitation, and from specialisation to sustainability of salons.
