The landscape discourse has a multidisciplinary and collaborative
character with many stakeholders like plant ecologists, scientists, botanists,
hydrologists, naturalists, geographers, horticulturists, and others, working
individually and in various institutions and organizations. Their ideas, studies,
projects, and documentation have been informing, encouraging, and inspiring
all of us as landscape architects. This issue brings together some of the
encounters with these experts while sharing their ideas and experiences.

extending the discourse about diverse facets of its natural and cultural heritage.

The passing of Dr. B N Goswami, a distinguished art historian, marks
 the end of an era, with his impactful contributions to art genres 
and the exploration of miniature paintings. Narender Dengle pays 
tribute in a review of a book on Amit Dutta's film about 18th-century 
painter Nainsukh. KRIVA students' studio work on the Braj region,
 reflecting on its culture, is highlighted. Saptrishi Sanyal challenges 
conservation frameworks in Shanti Niketan, emphasizing a dynamic approach. 
Landscape architects in Gurugram focus on sustainable design, 
and Prof. Kazi Ashraf introduces "Padma," exploring river journeys. 
Wishing a creative and peaceful new year ahead.

The special issue has been compiled with a diverse set of exciting ideas extendig the meaning and knowledge about the world of landscape architecture.

The special issue showcases some of the ISOLA Professional Awards Winning designs by young landscape practices in India, along with expanding the discourse in the form of essays, interviews   and art features. 

Although LA Journal has been featuring various perspectives, discussions
and projects based on the subject of Urban Design, this issue – Designing
Urban – brings to forefront the discourse in a formal way. We welcome
urban designers Rajat Ray and Biley Menon, who have curated this special
issue as guest editors.

The special issue based on Srinagar introduces the region while exploring its distinct features and character.
 It  compiles some of the hope stories in the realm of nature, culture and design belonging to the region.

In recent years, a diverse set of creative endeavors have been conceptualized, that
have expanded the boundaries of understanding the meaning and value of the
discipline of landscape architecture in the country. They have brought to the
forefront its multidisciplinary character, ever imbibing from various environmental,
cultural, and aesthetic influences around.  The issues profiles  some of these endeavours.

The issue brings to forefront important discussions, essays and features regarding the crucial issues of Climate Change. It is edited by Mohan Rao, landscape architect based in Bengaluru.

After two years of being produced in digital format, LA Journal
resumes its print version from the first issue of this year. We
welcome Sujata Kohli to our Advisory Board of the Journal.

The issue showcases landscape architect Jon Coe's contribution
in the area of policy and projects in rural realms
of the conflict zone of Afganisthan while in the book 
Wandering and Ponderings by Shirish Beri, the author 
captures the spirit of a few by his hand-drawn
sketches.In another book review, Prashanta Bhat, brings to forefront many of
the ideas of Patrick Geddes, town planner of 20th century, 
in context of traditional parts of urban India 
under colonial rule. Some of the other features include 
an essay by Rajnish Wattas about the natural character of the city of Chandigarh its integration in the master plan and a feature on a homestead garden in Kerala, where the place becomes a
a microcosm of a peaceful and happy co-existence of nature and man.

The special issue based on the subject of Landscape Education in India is edited by Nikhil Dhar, who has been involved in landscape academics for a long time now. The issue discusses various issues and concerns of teaching the subject at both fundamental and higher education levels.

The issue features some of the prestigious institutional development projects located in various geographical locations in the country. The issue also shares special feature on Building in the Garden,
profiling legacy of Joseph Allen Stein along with other features.

The Journal celebrates 20 years of its inception in an anniversary issue by featuring ideas
and works, while reflecting on the passing years.

The issue features various articles on diverse subjects including documenting vernacular architecture and the joy of drawing free hand in this technology-driven age. It shares views of Marc Trieb, Professor of Architecture Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley’s College of Environmental Design on the idea of "aesthetics", eastern and western cultures, the role of technology in academics, and many other subjects. The issue also showcases Adyar Ponga, a wetland restoration project in Chennai, along with other features. 

The issue features articles paying tribute to Pradeep Sachdeva, an eminent architect who passed away a few months ago. It also comprises of the concluding section of discourse on Redevelopment  Central Vista where professionals, thinkers, and professional bodies share their views about the project. A special feature on the works on Feisal Alkazi  is another highlight of the issue.  

In India, the distinctive informal form of urbanity is one of the main challenges in this war against COVID-19. The issue features diverse views in this realm along with discourses on design of public spaces including few streetscapes.

While introducing the natural and cultural histories,the issue profiles small creative endeavours in the realm of spatial design and landscape in theregion while highlighting various lessons that can be learnt from it. 
It shares views and perspectives of professionals and thinkers who are engaged in working and thinking about it.

The issue profiles the idea of Heritage Conservation under diverse set of frames - projects including restoration of Flora Fountain, Mumbai, Water Systems of Chitradurg Fort, Restoration of a Mughal Garden in Agra and other. Scholars like David Gilmartin and Ebba Koch discusses various related topics - role of environmental history, relationship of nature and culture, idea of public and private and so on. New works in the city challenge the notion of democracry and planned development.

The issue brings on board diverse knowledge bases regarding the natural resource of water - Lakes in Historic City of Udaipur, Mapping East Kolkata Wetlands, Lakes of Delhi, Buckingham Canal Competition and much more.

The issue is an attempt to initiate a thought process on the Landscape Discourse  in India. New Delhi based Landscape Architect, Suneet Mohindru, who is the guest editor of the issue notes that the main objective is to try to integrate the nuances of landscape architecture as a phenomenon, thought and object, both in education and practice.

Few city based landscape practices are also being profiled. Special interview with Pranay Lal, author of landmark book about history of earth, INDICA and Tracing Narratives, a travelling exhibition on the idea of Garden are some of the other features.

It profiles an eminent landscape practice based in Pune. The issue also features winning entry of the design competition of Redesigning Maharashtra Nature Park, Mumbai .

The anniversary issue pays tribute to Anupam Mishra, the environmentalist.
The issue shares views of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, a musician and Ranjit Lal, a naturalist and ornithologist, find an easy likeness with us designers, who are constantly engaged in improving the character of our art and grappling with the issues of identity, regionalism, respecting context, urbanization and living with nature. The diverse range of works and thoughts of architect artist Gautam Bhatia provokes us to look for our space in a larger framework, to think about the social relevance of our chosen path. Sharing the experiences and philosophy of the practice of m/s Prabhakar B Bhagwat is fascinating for anyone who is interested in the confluence of art and landscape design and is a source of inspiration for professionals.

The issue features an interview with Sunita Narain, Director, Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), where she answers questions on various areas of common interest and concern with the landscape profession about nature, environment and development.

The issue also includes the study of Agra presenting a perspective of looking at a city as part of a larger natural region. The feature on revival of Naubad Karez in Karnataka tries to integrate the traditional water system with the present day planning while Birkha Bawari in Rajasthan, celebrates the design vocabulary of traditional step well, using vernacular materials and traditional building techniques, in a contemporary social context of a group housing. A dilapidated quarry site located in the foothills of the mountain range of Aravalli, in the midst of an urban jungle is restored as a public park in an ecologically sensitive way – reviving the native flora. We need many such projects in urban realms, especially wastelands and dilapidated sites where along with the functional requirements, environ-mental and social parameters become an integral part of the design process. Another public park in the city adopts a completely different design expression – Nehru Park, celebrating five decades of its inception. The feature on the park researches its history, design ideas and development while mapping its documentation process.
