The May-June 2024 issue Cover Story by Parijat Sourabh emphasises the upswing witnessed by Africa's airfreight sector. As he puts it, “While challenges exist, initiatives to enhance capabilities and regional integration are gaining momentum.”

Logistics Update Africa Jan Feb 2023 Magazine

In the first issue of 2023, Logistics Update Africa’s cover story examines the momentum building up in unlocking the full potential of Africa’s air cargo sector and how air cargo, as a mode of transport, should position itself as a premium mode that offers speed and reliability to shippers. In the focus section we look at how a new generation of African entrepreneurs and technopreneurs are trying to solve the inefficiencies and hurdles in its logistics, by collaborating and leveraging the best from each other. The special report is about how Africa is at a critical juncture to realise its full aviation and air cargo potential against the ratification of the Single African Air Transport Market or SAATM. In this issue we provide a detailed review of Flower and Perishable Logistics Africa conferences held in Kenyan capital Nairobi in November 2022. We also have a report on how sustainability and carbon footprint are becoming important considerations when it comes to packaging for cut flower exports.

Logistics Update Africa – Nov-Dec 2022

 

In the last issue of 2022 we turn our attention to fresh produce and the logistics for them. Lakshmi Ajay, in her cover story, finds out how infrastructure upgrades, collaboration, more air connections, cold storage facilities, government support, and new markets could spell good tidings for the flower and fresh industry of Africa. The special report is about how African flower exporters have found sea freight as a reliable alternative to air to move flowers in controlled atmosphere containers. According to findings in the industry report, sustainability is becoming a key to humanitarian logistics. The country report and interview in this issue are of and from Nigeria. The West African country, the report finds, should become a production-based commercial hub to provide the critical mass of air cargo to feed over 13 cargo airports. Basis Agboarumi, MD of SAHCO, in the interview, says it is time for Nigeria to overcome stunted growth. The focus section argues that to have AfCFTA implemented effectively, there is a lot more that the continent needs to do collectively, including maritime infrastructure of ports and terminals.

This issue of LUA puts the focus on e-commerce activities in the continent and the Cover Story by Lakshmi asks the question, aided by the entry and consolidation of big retail players, a large number of informal retailers in Africa coming online, digital payments, investments, and more purchasing power, will e-commerce logistics in Africa rise to the challenge and unlock the growth potential that has the world and investors taking note?

In her industry report, Zinal Dedhia outlines how Africa’s air cargo industry is getting ready for change. The sector is confronting several challenges that include rising fuel price and poor connectivity. “But given the enormity of opportunities the continent is primed for growth,” she writes.  

The Report by Roy Ezze hopes for a harmonised economic regulation in African air cargo and tries to find out how will AFCAC’s build-up of states’ economic regulation capacity affect the sector.

We also have a Special Report by Lakshmi Ajay that talks about digital transformation and sustainability as the two megatrends of 2021. “However, it was the efficiency and reliability of digital processes and innovations, where human error is reduced and which presented great cost savings and risk reduction for businesses worldwide that seemed to have caught on when it comes to the air cargo sector,” as she puts it.
