. Bihar Jharkhand: The state in which the Buddha achieved Enlightenment some 2,500 years back is still known by a variation of this word for a Buddhist settlement. Ancient capital Pataliputra is now Patna but, for the moment, it best showcases its past in its museums. The Ganga, Saryu, Gandak and Sone keep Bihar fertile. The heavily forested and tribal state of Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar in the year 2000.

The combined population of the tribes of Jarawa, Onge, Great Andamanese  and Sentinelese is less than 500. Which is why one-third of Andamans (and all of Nicobar) is a tribal reserve. You can visit only some of the 570-odd islands of Andamans, but the corals, beaches, mangroves... will stay with you forever

Odisha: Located on the East Coast of India, adjoining the Bay of Bengal,this well-forested, partly hilly state is rich in mineral resources and fertile, rice-producing land, and home to a large tribal population. For the tourist, Odisha is all about the triangle of Konark, Puri and Bhubaneswar, with enchanting ancient temples and a lovely beach at Puri. Chilika, India’s largest lake, and the Simplipal and Bhitarkanika sanctuaries are a treat for wildlife lovers who wish to commune with nature sans crowds.

Punjab: It thrived along five rivers in India and Pakistan. Rich and fertile, Punjab was India’s nursery for the Green Revolution in agriculture and is its largest wheat producer. This land gave birth to the grandeur of Sikhism. Of course, it’s the sheer hearty zest for song, dance, food that Punjab is best known for.

Rajasthan: The idea of Rajasthan as a ‘desert state’ is romantic, and the camels, the resplendent fort-palaces the turbans and the haunting voices of desert bards add up to make an irresistible whole.

Sikkim: A tiny mountainous state with a small population, Sikkim is fairly close to heaven. A mixed population of Lepchas, Bhutias and Nepalis live at close quarters with the third highest peak in the world, Kangchendzonga. Ancient monasteries, like Tashiding and Pemayangtse, the Nathu La pass at China border, stunning lakes like Tsomgo and Gurudongmar, some excellent trekking and friendly Gangtok are its main charms.

. Tamil Nadu: The classicism of Tamil Nadu is one of its most striking features. The breath–taking sculpture and temple architecture of Chola Tanjore or Chidambaram lives on. Music and dance still enrich the locals; Chennai’s Carnatic music season goes on for 6 weeks. Meanwhile, the East Coast runs along a lovely seaside (with unique Puducherry showcasing a French colonial heritage) and the Nilgiri Hills host misty Ooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal.

Telangana: The newest state, carved from Andhra Pradesh shares its capital Hyderabad with Andhra Pradesh. Spattered with forts and palaces, there are a fair number of temples as well. If you are a film buff, then Ramoji Film City is just the right place for you.

. Madhya Pradesh: At the heart of India lies this gentle, mellow land, playground to one of India’s great rivers, the Narmada, and two hill ranges, the Vindhya and Satpura. It is an intriguing landscape of plateaus, river valleys, rolling hills and forests. From the prehistoric site of Bhimbetka,to ancient Hindu and Buddhist monuments such as Khajuraho and Sanchi, to the tiger-rich forests of sanctuaries Bandhavgarh and Kanha, to hilly Mandu and the towns of Maheshwar, Omkareshwar and Amarkantak by the Narmada, MP is
quite a treasure.

. Maharashtra: Maharashtra spreads from the West Coast across peninsular India, taking in the culturally distinct Konkan Coast strip;  the Western Ghats, here called The Sahyadri; and stretches of cotton and sugarcane-growing land. The coast’s unspoilt beaches and Maratha forts are a picturesque combination. The hill stations Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani, Khandala, Matheran  are cool, green retreats and offer great trekking.

Jammu and Kashmir: Hosting the most diverse of landscapes, J&K    has plains and foothills in Jammu, lush high-altitude valleys and meadows in Kashmir, and the very high, cold desert of Ladakh, which is under snow for half the year. Kashmir is still struggling with separatist militancy, even as tourists can¹t resist its lakes and chinars. Amarnath and Vaishno Devi pilgrimages, and tours of Ladakh¹s lakes and monasteries are sights tourists brave every odd to visit.

. Uttar Pradesh: The Hindi heartland, the land of the fabled Banaras ki Subah (Banaras dawn) and Awadh ki Shaam (Lucknow dusk). Where the lands most sacred to Krishna (Braj), Ram (Ayodhya) and Shiva (Varanasi) exist with the greatest monuments of Indo-Islamic architecture — do we need to name the Taj Mahal?

North East: The northeastern part of the country is less frequented. The region comprising the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. The largest river island Majuli, the mighty Brahmaputra, the formidable terrain of Tawang, the faint colonial lifestyle, the lovely tea plantations, the floating islands on Loktak Lake, complete with old forts, a rich but unheard history will enrapture you.

Andhra Pradesh: For all its relative newness on the tourist map, Andhra has the destination visited every year by the maximum number of Indians: Tirupati. The state hosts the Balaji Temple, the ancient Buddhist site of Nagarjunakonda, and the wonderful Islamic buildings of the Qutub Shahi and Asaf Jahi dynasties at Golconda Fort and Hyderabad. Capital Hyderabad is an oasis of Deccani Urdu and a unique brand of cuisine and culture. Its twin city, Secunderabad, has arisen as the Mecca for all things IT. Visakhapatnam hosts the second largest port in the country.

Chhattisgarh: A part of Madhya Pradesh till the year 2000, Chhattisgarh is another of nature’s wonder. Be it the mighty Chitrakot Waterfall, the meeting point of the Vindhya and Satpura ranges at the Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary, or the picturesque Kanger Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, the luscious forests, or the rich fauna, Chhattisgarh cannot fail to enthrall.

. Delhi: The capital of India is used to being the seat of power since Muhammad Ghori founded the Delhi Sultanate in 1193. It boasts three World Heritage Sites; a rich culture of many ethnicities, food habits and festivals; a population of some 16 million; India’s political elite; and buzzing economic energy. In short, it is the heart of the country.

Gujarat: This westernmost state of India projects out into the Arabian Sea. Its northern region, Kutch, with culturally distinct pastoral communities and exquisite crafts, is a salty desert-cum-marshland. The coast cradles the old port-town of Mandvi and coastal temples of Somnath and Dwarka. Gir National Park is the only place in India where Asiatic Lions survive. To the east, big city and hub Ahmedabad, and Surat, are the old commercial centres.

Karnataka: Geography and history join hands to make Karnataka a charming destination: A coastal belt rich with natural beauty and Hindu traditions; the Western Ghats, home to forests like Nagarhole and Bandipur; the charms of Coorg’s plantations aromatic with coffee and spices; the rugged Deccan Plateau with ancient memories like that of the Vijaynagar Kingdom at Hampi or the Chalukya strong–holds at Badami and Pattadakkal. And, of course, that hub of software-with-saris, bookshops-with-bars and tradition-with-modernity that is Bengaluru.

Goa: Between its Portuguese past, its fishing village feel, its world famous beaches, ancient temples, paddy fields and plantations, there’s something in Goa for everyone. The Portuguese, who ruled from 1510 to 1961, left their imprint on local language, religion, cuisine, music, and, of course, built heritage. The sea, beaches, and hills were gifted by nature.
Tourism brought water sports, Western migrants brought alternative ways of life, and everyone seems to have brought beer and fish.

Lakshadweep: The coral islands of Lakshadweep, which tourists can visit under a controlled eco-tourism plan, are beautiful as well as intriguing. Life moves to a gentle rhythm shaped by the sea; men go fishing, women spin coir and the coconut is the main source of food, drink, fuel, oil and shelter. The visitor is as enchanted by the magnificent lagoons, coral reefs and marine life as by the divine simplicity here.

. Uttarakhand: Carved out of the hilly areas of Uttar Pradesh in the year 2000, with Dehra Dun as the capital, the tourism slogan of ‘Devbhumi’ is justified. It is the seat of the sacred Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Rishikesh, Haridwar. Trek in the stunning high-altitude meadows of the Garhwal region, ski at Auli, go rafting on the Ganga, visit old favourites Mussoorie and Nainital or discover sublime Kumaon through its innovative resorts.

Himachal Pradesh: The state, which holds all five ranges that comprise the Great Himalaya is pure unadulterated delight.  The stunning valleys of Lahaul, Kullu, Chamba, Kinnaur and Kangra; the rather cosmopolitan joys of Shimla and Manali; the possibilities of skiing, heli-skiing, paragliding,trekking; the colonial buildings; slate-roofed temples and Buddhist monasteries; not to mention the Ravi, Chenab, Beas and Sutlej. West Bengal: West Bengal is the land of Ganga’s avatar as the Hooghly, which flows into the world’s largest mangrove forests, the Sunderbans. Kolkata is culturally intense, full of slow-paced delights.
