Blink and it’s the end of the year. Just like that, we’ve come full circle and back to The Giving Issue. As we wrap up 2024, now’s a good time to reflect (or at least try to, amid all the year-end merry-making) and think about what it really means to give. More than material, giving can show up as kindness, or express itself through time and support. Giving with heart can be as simple as sharing an encouraging word. As the Malay adage goes, ‘niat tu penting’. If there’s anything that makes me proudly Malaysian, it’s that we’ll always look out for each other. We’ve seen it happen countless times since the COVID-19 pandemic days of the #KitaJagaKita movement. Our cover star this month, Shen-tel Lee, embodies that spirit of giving in style. In fact, her ongoing charities were born of the collective efforts of everyday Malaysians. A fashion darling on the KL scene, Shen-tel Lee proves that social media, when used correctly, can create meaningful change (Page 42). Alongside her are many others with a heart for giving; and we’re celebrating their contributions this month. Read about the sporting philanthropists making their respective sports more accessible (Page 120) or the six Malaysians who’ve made it their call to serve our various communities from children to coral reefs (Page 34). Perhaps they’ll inspire you to get involved in something meaningful and worthwhile this coming new year. If there’s one resolution I’ll be making, personally, it’ll be to do better and be better. Well, that’s my intention for 2025, for whatever it’s worth. Stay kind to each other. Merry Christmas.
