ILAM’s LAND.SCAPE. Magazine:  How Green is Green? Green Infrastructure Edition

We believe that green infrastructure is the heartbeat of a healthy city. From improving air and water quality to reducing the effects of climate change, green infrastructure plays a crucial role in making our cities sustainable. 

In this issue, we delve into the exciting world of green infrastructure, showcasing the innovative projects and ideas that are shaping our urban landscapes. The Feature entices the notion of green initiatives in landscape architecture as an emerging trend for developing towns and cities. The fundamental nature of green could not be separated from the landscape architecture profession.

Land.Scape brings you the essence of landscape and cultural heritage to be indulged in this particular issue. The Feature invites you to rethink heritage - how smart public spaces in the World Heritage Sites can be possible. The Forum section presents to you a discussion of ‘Heritage Landscape: Policy, Planning and Design Dilemma’ by a few prominent professionals in the field of landscape architecture. In commemoration of the contributionsof the pioneer of ‘Malaysian landscape architecture’, the Personality section enlightens you with the biography and critical reflection of LAr. Haji Nik Malik Haji Zainal Abidin, the exemplary persona behind MLA Landscape Architects. 

Portfolio section intends to sway you with the stories of kelip-kelip heritage of Kuala Selangor, the Malaysian historic landscape narrative of Bandar Hilir Melaka, the ancient stroll along the Japanese Shirakawa-Go, as well as the chronicles of Taiping Lake Gardens’ resilience. Intertwining the importance of heritage in the spectrum of Research and Education, critical appraisals are made through the topics of ‘The Future of The Past: Engaging Cultural Landscapes as Heritage Resources’, ‘Cultural Landscape as a Model for the Integration of Ecology and Economics for the Post-Pandemics’ and also ‘Building a Heritage Community: A Participatory Approach’. Under the Technology and Construction section, the ideas of landscape conservation work are expanded through the application of GIS and remote sensing as well as the implementation of proper project management. 


In this issue, Land.Scape delightfully presents to you the highlights of the 57th International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) 2020 World Congress and World Landscape Architects Summit. IFLA2020 was held in George Town, Penang from 18th to 22nd August 2021. The theme ‘Future Tense’ for this issue was inspired by the IFLA2020 theme itself – which enthuses us to a few spectrums such as transient living, homogenous culture and diverse population, finite resources and natural disaster and others. Transpiring from those beliefs, we bring you three glocal portfolios on the table – Kebun-Kebun Bangsar with its sustainable foodscape ideation, Gamuda Gardens with its biophilic niche in the making, as well as The Bird Wave Bridge with its clarion call to reconnect with nature. Comprehensive green urbanism and outdoor spaces as the rescue agent for the community well being during the pandemic are also discussed from the perspectives of research and education. Delving into the viewpoints of construction and technology, Land.Scape comes up with two essential matters which concern the landscape architects’ roles in plant biosecurity within Malaysian built environment as well as sustainable materials in the landscape architecture industry.
