An important theme that runs through several of the stories in this issue is the power that you have to create significant change in the world simply by choosing how and where you spend your money. We all love to shop and there is no reason to stop doing that but the products you choose and brands you support can end up making a huge difference in so many ways. I hope that these stories will show how much power you have to create a lot of good for people less fortunate.

While gathering together the quotes for the More Than Words page of this Music & Dance issue (p1) I was struck by the number of musicians proclaiming the transformative power of their medium. Music transcends language, they said. It cuts across cultural boundaries, it reaches beyond nationality, race, colour, creed and other tribal barriers; music is a universal language that speaks to us all no matter its origin. And while all that is true, music is also one of the most ephemeral of all art forms – once the music stops, that raw emotion that it tapped, as only music can, has gone...

We live in a fast-paced world (as our theme this issue, Fast and Furious, celebrates) and there̕s always an easy temptation at the end of a busy day to fl ick on the television or surf the Net, rather than to open a book. But to do so is really to miss out on one of the simplest and most enriching pleasures humankind has devised for itself – the joy of reading. Books allow us to learn new things, to be a witness to history, to see inside the soul of a person, to be transported to another time, another place, another life, another world.

If only life was like the movies. Then again, maybe not. We are inspired by cinema in more ways than one, but as we all know, there are downsides to the glitzy world of showbiz. The pressure, the paparazzi, the people you seek to entertain it sometimes can be all too much for one to bear. But of course, there\'s the good stuff, too. The entertainment arena has proved to be an avenue where Asians can showcase their creative talent to the world, excelling in front of, or behind the camera. We would also like to toast the hottest NBA star of the moment – Jeremy Lin...

Everyone loves a good bargain. That feeling of smug satisfaction of snagging a genuine value-for-money deal is incomparable. But at the same time, there is no wrong in splurging occasionally on something worthwhile, or meaningful. Take care that you do not fall prey to the adage: penny wise, pound foolish. In a world where materialism is an all-consuming force, it may be difficult for some to quell the urge to make a quick buck when the opportunity arises. There is also the bipolar distribution of wealth.

“Fusion” is a word that is somewhat loosely used nowadays, an umbrella term that espouses any two or more things thrown together in a mix that somehow produces a betterthan- expected result. But to some, fusion is not merely a label – it is a way of life, a symbol of culture. Take the Peranakans, whose very existence stems from a rich tapestry of Chinese and Malay heritage. Fusion is in their language, in their food, in their dressing – in their everything. In this case, fusion is }their identity.

When I was younger, my mother and my aunt used to take me to visit various social welfare centres around Singapore, especially during the school holidays. The few times I dared to grumble (albeit under my breath) that I sometimes felt awkward interacting with the residents of those homes, my aunt would always firmly reply, “ Not everyone is born with compassion, but compassion can be cultivated. You’ll never know what it is like to be in need until you have experience with those in need.” And she was right...

Hotels with iris scanning security systems, wind-powered watches, clothes illuminated by sound… these are just some of the high-tech innovations we unmask in this issue. But all these had to start somewhere; we also take you on a trip down memory lane to reminisce the good old days where mobile phones weighed a ton and the Game Boy was everyone\'s ultimate toy.

IT IS NoT eVery dAy that an Asian player wins a Grand Slam. When tennis ace Li Na lifted the 2011 French Open Women’s Singles trophy in victory, Asians from all walks of life proudly celebrated with her. With sports superstars like Yao Ming, Park Ji-sung, Manny Pacquiao and Ichiro Suzuki leading the way, there can be little doubt that Asians can shine on the world stage.

This issue is packed with travel goodies, from health tips for the road to packing right to cool finds for thrifty travellers. We also give you a sneak peek of fascinating art museums around the world, Seychelles’ vibrant culture and off-the-beaten-path jaunts in Bali and Hualien. You can also do more than just play tourist in a new city; make a difference with the local community there with volunteer travel.

This issue, we follow the footsteps of Asians who have made a stamp on the world and society. Be it topping international music charts or producing high-fashion knick-knacks in developing countries, they prove that when there’s a will, there’s a way.

The concept for The Read grew from the desire to publish a magazine for young adults to help with their English, while providing the best mix of education and entertainment that no other magazine currently provides. While educational, reading should also be fun: something to enjoy when you want to relax. While embracing inspirational stories, the magazine also provides the opportunity to experience different countries, languages, cultures and people.
