We have been seeing a slowdown in the semiconductor market for the past half year. That being said, several companies have begun to see the light at the end of this tunnel. In recent months, we have seen advancements in the AI space, such as ChatGPT and several other technological introductions. These will all spur demands for chips, and, hopefully, we will start to see an improvement in our market situation. Despite this uncertainty, we must not forget to continue investing in developing our talent pool and continuing to work towards building a more resilient supply chain for our business.

The semiconductor industry has undoubtedly become the backbone of modern technology, powering the devices and systems that have revolutionized our lives. From the humble beginnings of the first integrated circuit to the intricate microprocessors of today, semiconductors have shaped the world we inhabit, propelling us into an era of unimaginable possibilities.

In this commemorative edition, we take you on a captivating exploration of the industry's evolution, showcasing the trailblazers, the brilliant minds, and the myriad of technological breakthroughs that have paved the way for the future. We delve into the past, tracing the roots of semiconductors and paying homage to the visionaries who dared to dream beyond the confines of what was considered possible.

The semiconductor industry has long been a catalyst for technological advancements that has transformed our modern world. From the advent of 5G, Artificial Intelligence (AI), IoT to Additive Manufacturing, they have altered the very fabric of the semiconductor landscape in the recent years; unlocking infinite possibilities and growth for businesses.
 
In this forward-thinking edition of VOICE, we dive more into the transformative power of AI and in the realm of semiconductors. We examine how AI is revolutionizing chip design, optimising processes and how additive manufacturing can revolutionise the semiconductor industry through faster or custom prototyping and also advanced packaging to maximise cost efficiency. 

Transformation with the Power of Diversity and Inclusion

We hope that companies will seize these opportunities that we have created for the 55th anniversary of the industry. With this in mind, we must not rest on our laurels and continue to develop our talent pool and strengthen our social compact. SSIA will continue to organize platforms such as the Semiconductor Women's Forum — in its third iteration on March 9, 2023-to demonstrate the concerted efforts by the industry to embrace a culture of diversity and inclusion as part of growing the talent pipeline; to inspire and attract more female talent to join and thrive in our industry.

While the road ahead will not be easy, we have braved many storms before as an industry in solidarity. With this spirit, we stand together as one voice, one ecosystem, and one people.

DEVELOPING TALENTS FOR AN ELECTRIFYING FUTURE — As we wrapped up a year of highs and lows in 2022, there are still a lot of uncertainties that abound globally as we start off the year. Around the world, there are signs that the global economy is projected to face strong headwinds: mounting energy costs, geopolitical tensions, rising inflation and disruption in supply chains.

Through these challenges, building a strong robust talent pool remains top of mind. With about 2000 jobs expected to be created in the next three to five years in our sector, the burning question will be where and how do develop these talents and to retain them. More importantly, besides mid-career switchers, the aim of most companies is to steer the youth as their career of choice.

This issue of VOICE Magazine coincides with SSIA's Electronics Industry Day 2023, and focuses on the talent of tomorrow.

INDUSTRIAL TRANSFORMATION — As technology, sustainability and other major shifts reshape the way companies operate, the big question has always been how can businesses enthuse and empower their workers with the skills to stay relevant and competitive. How do we fundamentally ensure that there is a healthy and sizeable pool of talents amongst the youth. The latter has always been the bane of the industry and this will be one of the focal points in the year to come.

With the slowing down of the economy, companies are already starting to relook and optimise their operations and looking at ways to digitalise and automate to boost their productivity and bolster their resiliency. Staff retraining is the modern mantra now and many companies are cultivating their staff to reap outsized rewards.

As the world emerges from the pandemic, we are already seeing more global economies opening up their borders and reining in on their businesses as they gain ground. This issue of Voice expounds on how some companies in our industry continue to power technologies to support growing global climate goals such as solar panels and electric vehicles while doing so in a sustainable fashion. Vol 22 is also our bummer issue where it features heavily on topics that are related to our Summit 2022 on 'Advancing Technologies Towards A Sustainable Future'.

Talent development is one of the most important focus to continuously grow and advance in the advanced technology industry. People makes the difference.

It is important to focus not only on manufacturing, equipment, service support, but also on advanced processes and upstream product design and solution. IC Design enables the semiconductor ecosystem.

The semiconductor industry is presently in a crucial period of history, caused by the pandemic and supply chain disruptions over the past years. Fortunately, the semiconductor industry continues to grow despite these disruptions, with a surge in demand for chips globally, and we expect this trend to continue well into the future.
To grow in stride, it is important to support and promote the initiative to strengthen and grow the semiconductor industry's ecosystem by facilitating innovation through business collaboration.

Our semiconductor industry believes that fostering diversity of thought, perspective and experience is essential in order to innovate and stay competitive.

Ministry of Social and Family Development in Singapore has dedicated 2021 as the Year of Celebrating SG Women. It encourages all of us to come together as a community to take stock of the progress of our women, our society, and how we can continue to support these aspirations. It is also important for companies in the semiconductor 
industry to recognise the significance of having more women in the sector. More so, now than ever, for us to emerge stronger from COVID-19.

Even as many sectors scaled back in 2020, the electronics and semiconductor industry was blazing forward. It continues to create good job opportunities and offer a variety of roles to shape the future of technology.
