Fabrik’s 30th issue marks the quarterly publication's eighth year championing noteworthy projects at the intersection of art, design and architecture in Los Angeles.

This is our annual design issue, and features The Magical Luxury of designer Ini Archibong, the Hammer Museum's Made in L.A. exhibition, and A+D Museum coming to downtown Los Angeles. In this issue we profile artist Barbara Kasten, Korean photographer, Young-hwan Choi, and environmental artist and designer Doron Gazit, who finds inspiration in a balloon. We also showcase ARTRA Curatorial’s picks of artists you should know about, and we continue our ongoing Reviews of recent gallery and museum exhibitions.

This issue coincides with Fabrik’s Photo Independent Art Fair, and the Month of Photography LA. The photography theme crops up in our coverage of the dual Mapplethorpe exhibits at LACMA and The Getty and our write-up of the new LA outpost of Sprüth Magers, where John Baldessari’s inaugural show featured a series of cleverly manipulated photos with unexpected twists. In honor of Bestor Architecture’s 20th anniversary, Fabrik chats with the firm's Principal architect Barbara Bestor about design inspirations, channeling John Lautner, and tongue-in-cheek concepts for Gen-X senior housing. Shana Nys Dambrot’s profile on Oliver M. Furth and LA><ART><DESIGN welcomes the timely nexus of art and integral design. We query Venice-based multimedia artist Doug Aitken about how his kinetic light sculpture, decked out in LED lights that respond to motion and sound, also became the subject of his exhilarating documentary film Station to Station. Fabrik’s twenty-eighth issue greets Spring with photographer Lena Herzog’s splendid black and white studies of Dutch artist Theo Jansen’s Strandbeests, kinetic sculptures that derive their motion entirely from the presence of beach winds. The magazine once again concentrates its focus on Los Angeles' annual city-wide celebration of photography known as MOPLA (Month of Photography Los Angeles). The issue’s features include forthright reflections on time’s passage, with Douglas Kirkland’s quintessential images of storied icons and Sally Peterson’s ONE HUNDRED, a large-scale portrait series of tenacious centenarians. Henri van Noordenburg’s recent monochrome-blue landscapes present an intriguing narrative of fact and fiction open to interpretation at the 2nd Annual Photo Independent Art Fair.

In Los Angeles, the New Year now reliably brings tidings of bold vision, reflected in Phil Tarley’s The Cluster Paradigm, his thorough round-up of fine art fairs that will brilliantly transform our city well into Spring. Fabrik’s 27th Issue, coinciding with this ‘Art Fair’ season, profiles landscape photographer Florian Maier-Aichen, who splits his time living/working between LA and Germany, and his recent hauntingly sumptuous exhibition at Blum and Poe.
