Need a winter getaway?  It might be chilly outside, but Greece will warm your heart!  Winter resorts, famous mountain teas, hearty comfort food and add a few amazing history and culture features to stimulate your mind, this month's issue will delight you heart, mind and soul!

This month we look back in time to the glory of the Byzantine Empire, from simple wonders like the cuisine of the time to the last Emperor and his valiant attempt to hold the great city of Constantinople.  The era is a great and rich one in Greek history and we also share some recommendations of excellent books which further explore various aspects of the time. We also journey to Morea, where the yoke of the Ottoman occupation was finally broke some 368 years later.  To walk in Greece is to walk on history - and while there are many winding paths and roads, in some way, they eventually all meet.. creating the magical and majestic story of Greece and its people.

"Learning from Athens" - the theme of documenta 14, the major contemporary arts festival, and it has officially opened in Greece this April! We also visit the Ancient Forum, travel to Lake Tsvilou and take a look at renowned photographer Robert McCabe's exhibition "Greece, Pathways to an Enchanted Life" opening at the Greek Embassy in Brussels this month. We also continue our Healthy Foods of Greece series as well as offer a delicious recipe from our friends at Cookouvagia! We are excited and privileged to share with you this month an interview with the Greece’s new Minister of Culture, Lydia Koniordou.  Appointed in November of 2016, she has taken the reigns of a department that oversees the protection of Greek culture  - no small task for a country that has tens of thousands of years of documented history, culture and tradition.  We wish her good fortune, not only for her, but for all of Greece and its amazing treasures.

We also had the opportunity to speak with Vasilis Tsikaras, director of the film EXODOS 1826, the first film made in over 46 years about Greece’s fight for independence from its Ottoman occupiers.

We are pleased to share a special feature this month on the 150th Anniversary of the National Archaeological Museum in Greece. With their special exhibition Odysseus, the Museum continues on their journey of celebrating Hellenism! It's also the start of Apokries, now through February 26. Costumes, songs, and celebrations throughout Greece will abound and we share a special celebration from the island of Amorgos and a wonderful lenten recipe from Aglaia Kremezi, author of "Mediterranean Vegetarian Feasts" which she wrote from her home on the island of Kea. There's a theme, can you see it? We're celebrating the wonderful Cycladic Islands as the Museum of Cycladic Art celebrates its new exhibit "Cycladic Society 5000 Years Ago".

This month, our writers take you to Evrytania - full of history and heroes. As we approach March and the anniversary of the Greek War of Independence, we've got a host of wonderful places and inspiring stories to share. We also talk with artist Dimitris Koskinas this month, as well as curator of the Minoan Tastes exhibit series Jerolyn E. Morrison.

Greek War of Independence: On March 25, Greece will commemorate 195th anniversary of its declaration of Independence from the Ottoman Empire. A few years after Greece rose up, a motion came to the US House of Representatives to recognize their Independence.
