Wednesday, 27 September is World Tourism Day and this year the theme is Sustainable Tourism - a Tool for Development. In South Africa, September is Tourism Month. Under the theme ‘We Do Tourism Sustainably’, South African Tourism is driving awareness on the importance of domestic tourism to the economy. Botswana is renown as a safari destination. That’s a well-known fact. Lesser known, and yet, more appealing facts, lie on the far side of Botswana Tourism’s popular attractions.

Our May edition features Karongwe Portfolio, Hotel Verde and Jaci’s Lodges - three prime examples of eco-friendly properties in South Africa who meet, and even exceed expectations as outlined in the UNWTO 2017 International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development initiative.

The pristine environments of Grootbos and Sibuya nature reserves whose images grace our April edition cover reflect the commitment of these eco-friendly lodges to the 2017 International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. And a worthy UNWTO theme it is too. As our March front cover clearly shows, this edition focusses on B2B travel trade shows in South Africa. We investigate the, as yet, unanswered question: Does the tourism industry benefit from B2B trade shows, and if so, is the presence of two major travel trade shows sustainable? (see pages 18-19).

February is the season of love, whether it be paternal or romantic, we all express love in different ways. No matter how you slice and dice it, food and love are inextricably tied to hospitality. In the edition, Erik Wolf of the World Food Travel Association defines what food tourism is all about and explains how to get your slice of the pie. We also look at the state of tourism safety communications in South Africa and investigate the role of tour operators against the increase in booking aggregator business.

Our January front cover features a typical sundowner scene while on safari in South Africa. A Big Five safari is all about the sightings and experiences and sharing the thrill of these experiences with friends and family on social media is what travellers do. But internet connectivity at game reserves can be sporadic, if available at all. So how important is WiFi access? Is it a factor when travellers make their destination decisions? Do properties with great connectivity benefit more than those with poor or no connectivity? Our feature on page 08 finds out.
