Dogs are usually active, energetic and need regular exercise, whereas cats are generally lazy, and can sleep for 16 hours a day.
Just like the everlasting rivalry between dogs and cats, the dispute between dog and cat lovers will probably never end. While cat owners love the fact that cats are independent and self-sufficient, dog lovers feel that dogs are more attached to their owners than cats, and hence make a better pet. But what does science say? Read on...
Cats and Dogs – A Comparison
Cats belong to the Felidae family whereas dogs are a part of a large taxonomic family called Canidae. Both are carnivorous mammals and possess hunting abilities. However, due to their domestication, dogs now have a weaker instinct to hunt. Both cats and dogs need regular grooming if they are long-haired. Cats can happily live in small apartments and so can Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Pugs and other small dog breeds. However, large breeds such as Saint Bernard, Golden Retrievers and Akita generally need plenty of space to exercise and run around.
Dogs are usually active, energetic and need regular exercise, whereas cats are generally lazy, and can sleep for 16 hours a day. Both can be good with children if socialised early and have different training modules. While dogs can quickly be trained to obey basic commands such as ‘come', ‘sit' and ‘run’, cats learn to use a litter box more easily than dogs. Some dog breeds such as Labradors, Border Collies, Doberman Pinschers and German Shepherds are highly trainable and can be trained in bomb, weapon and drug detection.
