Members of South Africa’s export citrus industry have expressed doubt that the European Commission will resort to implementing a safeguard clause intended to significantly limit citrus volumes entering the EU from this country.
Use of the safeguard clause was reportedly being pushed mainly by Spain’s many smallscale citrus growers, who have been struggling to remain economically viable due to the low prices received for their fruit.
Deon Joubert, the special envoy for market access and EU matters at the Citrus Growers’ Association of Southern Africa (CGA), said the organisation did not believe that the EU would implement the safeguard clause against South African citrus, as the fruit was predominantly exported to the EU when citrus in the region was not in season.
