Through its agricultural community development programme, Manger Care Centre addresses food insecurity in poverty-stricken parts of Johannesburg. Siyanda Sishuba reports.
Manger Care Centre (MCC) in Johannesburg is a non-profit organisation formed in 1986 by CEO Gus Teitge and co-founder Pastor Retha Teitge. It offers support to people facing challenging circumstances, such as unemployment and homelessness. MCC also offers various training programmes to those at the centre and to the wider community.
The project offers a wide range of services that includes enterprise development, project management, business plan writing, end- user computer training, and AgriSETA-accredited agricultural training courses.
TRAINING
Initially, MCC focused on food aid, but over time began implementing agricultural development projects, as it was realised that longerterm solutions were needed to fight hunger, says MCC spokesperson, Andrew Wessels.
“The programme assists smallholder farmers and farmworkers with training aimed at improving their productivity,” says Wessels.
