Although some individual canola farmers in the Swartland region may have lost as much as 80% of their crop to an African bollworm outbreak, the impact on the overall canola yield is not expected to be significant.
This was according to Izanne Leygonie of Southern Oil, one of South Africa’s major canola role players. “It was a crisis but the worst is behind us,” she said.
