Non-profit organisation FoodForward SA is making it easier for South African farmers to donate surplus produce to less fortunate communities, thanks to its recently launched Second Harvest programme.

Putting Surplus Production On Farms To Good Use

Food Forward SA, which has been sourcing surplus food from manufacturers and retailers since 2009, recently expanded its services to include farmers. “We realised that one third of the food produced in South Africa went to waste before it reached the market, while almost 14 million South Africans go hungry every day. Our Second Harvest programme aims to recover post-harvest surplus while curbing hunger,” said Andy du Plessis, CEO of the non-profit food banking company, Food Forward SA.

To take part in the programme, farmers needed to register as a supplier at one of the Food Forward SA offices, he explained. Food Forward SA would then either collect the products with their own cold trucks or the farmers could register on the company’s digital platform, which connects suppliers with registered beneficiary companies.
