The spacing of your tomato plants will depend on the type of tomato being grown, and relevant proposed practices. Row spacing is not dependent on water or fertility, which can be managed, but on shading and practical management aspects.
As some varieties are leafier than others, this may determine whether you should prune. However, only indeterminate tomatoes are mostly pruned.
• Trellised tomatoes
Trellised tomatoes can be trained up between wires, or twine, that are attached to poles, and can be either pruned or left as is. If pruning, you can choose between single stems or two stems, and in the case of the latter, you can widen the intra-row spacing; a good starting point is about 30cm.
• Tunnels
In tunnels, the plants are pruned and trained up by turning the plant, so that the twine hooks under the point where the leaves grow out from the stem. You can choose to train up one or two stems.
