ANNABEL SHIELDS got her 2018 campaign off to a flying start with victory in the SEIB winter novice on her impressive six-yearold, The Cartender.
With only two combinations able to book their passage to the prestigious final at this year’s Longines Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead, it was a hard-fought affair over Neil Foster’s jump-off track. But stepping her Belgian-bred gelding slightly out of his comfort zone for the first time proved lucrative for the north-east rider.
“I think so much of him that up until today, I have never asked him any sort of questions against the clock and concentrated on just jumping double clears,” said Annabel. “I knew, though, that to qualify today I had to move him forward a little more than he’s been used to.”
The Cartender is owned jointly by Annabel’s father Robert and Justin Beckwith.
