Unlike other Neotropical psittacids, which are generally inactive during the hottest part of the day, these parakeets are perky and energetic dawn until dusk, foraging noisily on Ficus, Burseria and various seeds and flowers of Gliricula and Combretum. I have found them to be tame and approachable. But from time to time, entire flocks scatter in frantic flight from foraging or loafing sites, while emitting harsh piercing chirps. Often this abrupt behaviour is caused by the approach of an avian predator. Continuous low chattering vocalisations betray the presence of loafing or foraging flocks where pairs emit a variety of chirrups and twitters.
These parakeets generally nest in the dry season, according to local residents of the Pacific Slope Costa Rica. The wettest month in the Costa Rican range of this species is October and the dry Season usually begins in January, when daytime temperatures peak around 30 degrees C. Nest cavities are excavated in trees by both pair members, but sometimes old woodpecker cavities are used.
There are three subspecies: E.c.eburniros (southwest Mexico), E.c. clarae (most of northern and central Mexico) and E.c.conicularis (southern Mexico and Costa Rica). Their combined range totals about 1.5 million square kilometres. Despite their comparatively expansive range, the ecology of this species is scarcely known, according to researcher Carlos Palomera Garcia. The dearth of ecological information is especially problematic because this species has a history of being energetically targeted by illegal bird-trappers and poachers over the entire range. According to Birdlife, the Orange-fronted Parakeet is one of the four Mexican psittacids in highest demand in the illegal bird trade.

Regent parrots thriving in SA wetland

The wetland manager at Banrock Station in South Australia is, it’s fair to say, smitten with these striking birds. “September and October is Regent Parrot survey time,” Tim says, “So we’re up well before dawn to make sure we’re at the wetland’s to track the fly-in, fly-out breeding population.”
Landmark event for Philippine Cockatoo
