Gino Santos is a Filipino film director and producer who gravitates towards works that encircle contemporary issues&mdash;those whose narratives speak of the plight of the youth and the marginalized, and taboos that undeniably exist but are deliberately silenced by society. He effectively uncaps these phenomenons in his films, encouraging eyes to rivet on ambiguities to facilitate a wider discourse. &quot;I did a film about teen suicide called &quot;#Y&quot; back in 2014, during the time when not a lot of filmmakers would tackle issue. I clearly remember getting a lot of controversies for it,&quot; Santos recalls.When he was first introduced to cameras&mdash;particularly handy cam and phone cameras&mdash;he would make stop motion videos where he would ask his brother and friends to be his actors. &quot;We would try to recreate a movie that we have just seen. Nothing serious! It started with that. Creating my own stories would eventually capture my interest,&quot; states Santos. According to him, motion films ignite various senses to move and transport an individual to other places, making them a potent medium of communication. He furthers this by saying that filmmaking is always a collaborative work, and that he would not be where he is right now without the help of his team. &quot;The captain is only as good as his crew. I am grateful for those who chose to stick with me all these years,&quot; he shares. Being in the industry for eight years now, he has worked with the same team from College of Saint Benilde in making both short films and full lengths.Santos brings to light the importance for directors and other creators to have a stand and to fight for it. &quot;In film, I can practically show anything I want, but I value respect and I study the consequences when I create a film. I ask myself the value of my work&mdash;will it be beneficial, or will it be harmful? These are considerations that filmmakers should always entertain. Film is not just for show,&quot; he says.A great film is one that leaves a person breathlessly astounded after the credits. It goes beyond questioning. Santos mentions that the future of the film industry in the Philippines is good, as it is only just starting to be recognized around the world. &quot;Here, there are many opportunities for filmmakers, and we see the number of festivals growing each year. The local film holds a lot of promise and the future looks brighter than ever!&quot; he finishes.
