Micromatic Machine Tools (MMT), India’s largest and comprehensive CNC machine manufacturing and marketing company, supplies wide range of machines to automotive and other industries through its offices in 32 locations in India. Refurbishment is one of the strategies prevailing in the machine tool industries in India. MMT pilots the strategy by getting back its old machines to upgrade them and resell it to tier-5 and tier-6 companies.
“Usually refurbished machines are imported and have are priced low. But the low-end machines are not imported because of very high customs duty. Such machines can be procured in the domestic market from players like us. However, high- technology machines with inbuilt tooling solutions are imported. Around 70% of our business is pertaining to 2-axis and 3-axis machines which are low-end, serving small and medium scale industries. The imported refurbished machines do not pose much threat to us. We have also entered the refurbishing business. Though the initial investment on refurbishing is low, there are few challenges like pricing and logistics to be sorted out before we take up this on a mass scale. Logistics alone will be 20% of the machining cost. Hence this is still at the experimental stage,” T K Ramesh, Chief Executive Officer, Micromatic Machine Tools, told Auto Components India.
MMT has 3-4% of its business in 5-axis and 6-axis verticals. These machines mainly cater to aerospace industry. The company supplies mainly to small and medium- scale industries by producing cost effective machines. A lot of tier-2 and tier-3 players have started adapting the CNC models. The company has installed so far 32000 machines, including about 3000 in other countries.
