Our first taste of the new C-Class in UK guise comes from the range-topping diesel

We all know it, yet there’s still something mildly grating about the C300d not having a creamy 3.0-litre engine.

In fairness, manufacturers have by now figured out how to make an engine of just about any configuration feel as refined as it needs to be. Hence the most powerful diesel version of the new C-Class uses a 261bhp twin-turbo 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, assisted by a 48V mild-hybrid system.
