<div style="page-break-before:always; page-break-after:always"><div style="page-break-before:always; page-break-after:always"><strong>Steering gearboxes</strong> are set up with ratios that affect how many times you have to turn the steering wheel to get the front wheels to pivot a given number of degrees. In a wide-ratio box you have to turn the steering wheel many times to get the front wheels to rotate to full lock. In some cases, this could be 4.5 revolutions to turn the wheel from lock to lock. With a close-ratio steering box with a ratio of 12.7:1, it will only take about three revolutions of the steering wheel to go from lock to lock. What difference does 1.5 revolutions make? The answer is a lot. You may not notice it much when driving down to the grocery store, but if you ever find yourself on a long and twisty road or an autocross course, the wide-ratio box will make you work much harder than the close-ratio box. The close-ratio box will also make your car feel more responsive because it requires less driver input to change course.<div style="page-break-before:always; page-break-after:always"><p><img src="https://magztertemp.s3.amazonaws.com/1393393569/1638530543/articles/61d45006a4442/1641304009298.jpg" width="300" /></p><p>There are a few disadvantages to traditional gearboxes. First, since the box consists of many moving parts, there is quite a bit of friction and many wear points. It&rsquo;s also a heavier system overall due to the number and construction of parts in the system. Despite these drawbacks, it&rsquo;s a very good system that can perform as well as if not better than a rack-and-pinion system.</p><p><img src="https://magztertemp.s3.amazonaws.com/1393393569/1638530543/articles/61d45006a4442/1641303991643.jpg" width="300" /></p><p>There&rsquo;s an assumption that because a rack-and-pinion system is a newer technology, it&rsquo;s better. This isn&rsquo;t necessarily true. Remember, car manufacturers move to new technologies and systems for a variety of reasons such as cost, ease of assembly, and packaging. A rack has far fewer parts overall compared to a steering box system, and it takes up a lot less space. It&rsquo;s also less expensive to manufacture. Add in that it weighs a lot less, and it&rsquo;s easy to see why nearly all modern cars use this system. However, that doesn&rsquo;t mean it&rsquo;s better at the job of steering your car. It&rsquo;s great on a frame or chassis that was designed for it. However, if your car was designed for a steering box, then that&rsquo;s what you should stick with, generally speaking.
