Going Wild

Ring of Kerry, Cliffs of Moher and lots of clifftop tarmac – it’s Ireland’s Atlantic coast.

Going Wild

One warm August evening in 2016 saw us enjoying a beer in a town square in Bruges with fellow members of the BMW Club. Serenaded by a thumping set of rock classics performed by a Dom Littlewood lookalike dressed in pink PVC hot pants, we discussed our respective experiences and ambitions. Frank revealed his ongoing project for a club ride around the Atlantic coast of Ireland. My appetite was whetted. Roll forward 10 months and we joined a party of 16 other members of the club’s Oxford Section on the quay at Fishguard. The tour of Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way trail was our most ambitious ride since returning to the motorcycling fold in 2012.

The Wild Atlantic Way is a visitor trail launched by the Irish Government in 2014 as an initiative to encourage tourism. It stretches from Kinsale on the southern coast, along the western seaboard, to the country’s most northerly tip at Malin Head. Using ‘N’ or National class roads (equivalent to UK A-roads) as its spine, there is plethora of loops and spurs consisting of more minor roads that take you through some of the most exquisite coastal scenery imaginable. Combine this with a low population density, very few towns, and well signposted and maintained tarmac, and the result is motorcycle touring heaven.

The tour itself had been jointly planned by BMW Club members Frank and Geoff and, having investigated costs for accommodation, they’d booked with Paul Fitzgerald of Wild Irish Motorcycle Tours. Paul was able to offer significant cost savings for accommodation in hotels compared with direct booking, and was able to recommend tried and tested routes for ride-outs, plus suggestions of what to look for on the way.

Ducati Riding Experience

When I rode the Ducati DesertX to France last year, I did have a bit of an explore on some easy fire roads and gentle green lanes in the wilds of the Médoc area, but was left with the feeling that, had I the experience, the DesertX would have been capable of taking me along some more extreme trails to some even more exciting places. If only there was a way of finding out just how well the Italian adventure bike could cope with some more extreme terrain...

First Time Lucky?

It's ironic that the first all-new MV Agusta model to hit the marketplace right after Italy's No.1 trophy brand was acquired by Austrian giant Pierer Mobility, owner of off-road titans KTM, should be the company's first dual-purpose model of the modern era, powered by MV's all-new 931cc three-cylinder engine that's destined to form the basis of a whole series of new models in coming months and years.
