Truck drivers all love a good artery-clogging fry-up, right? Wrong! At least that’s according to Neal Walford (right), general manager of Chippenham Pit Stop.
“We don’t fry anything here, it’s all cooked in ovens,” he tells us while we are scanning the extensive menu, trying to decide what to have for breakfast. “The guys don’t want to eat in a greasy spoon these days, the standards have been raised.
“They want a decent, healthy meal and maybe a latte too.”
Ex-truck driver Neal seems to be onto something here. Chippenham Pit Stop, located just off junction 17 of the M4, is full to capacity every week night and serves up 1200 breakfasts and 700 main meals each week.
Locally sourced
After much dithering, we choose the Wiltshire Farmhouse Breakfast, which consists of dry cured bacon, butcher’s sausages, a free-range egg, a Portabello mushroom and a grilled tomato. For our £7.29 we also get a slice of toast and a cup of tea. Like everything else on the menu, all of the meat is locally sourced.
