The snow is falling and ski season is in full swing on the slopes of western North America

Peak Of Adventure

Nature’s annual mantle of winter’s snows across awe-inspiring terrain creates the perfect conditions for world-class skiing in North America’s western mountains. More than perhaps any other, winter sports are very much at the whim of the weather (auspicious or not). But for the spontaneous traveler who is ready to sniff out the right conditions, such leaps of faith can be rewarded with spectacular scenery and heart-pounding runs.

A collection of fine resorts dot the higher reaches of these slopes, and among the most celebrated destinations, there is much that’s new to report.

CALIFORNIA

The snow has arrived in California giving Alpine Meadows a chance to debut its $10 million Treeline Cirque chairlift. This detachable, high-speed quad transports guests from the base to Sherwood ridge in a quick five minutes, where the ride used to take 45. The lift features a mid-station for quick access to some of Alpine’s best intermediate terrain, then on to the expert back bowls of Sherwood.

Boasting Tahoe’s highest base elevation of 8,260 feet, Mt. Rose is among the snowiest of the local resorts year after year. Their Twofer-Tuesdays offers a $145 price for two tickets to be used that day.

Northstar’s fine mountain experience just got even better. Michael Mina’s Bourbon Pub Northstar is a brand new 125-seat restaurant located at the base of the Big Springs Gondola. Unfortunately, this year, free parking at Northstar will only be available at the Castle Peak parking lot, the first available parking option on Northstar Drive. Then you shuttle to the resort. There’s also paid parking by cash, which is available closer in. However, free parking is available at all lots daily after 3:00 PM.

World Fairs - As Art Basel prepares for its annual shows in Paris and Miami, CEO Noah Horowitz discusses the cultural and financial impact of the globe's premier contemporary art event

Art basel ceo Noah Horowitz isn’t used to doing things the old-fashioned way. Before stepping up to lead the largest, most prestigious art fair operator in the world, he was Basel’s director of the Americas, in charge of the company’s most contemporary-leaning show in Miami Beach. Now he turns his attention from one of the youngest major art cities in the world to one of the oldest: Paris.

Beyond the Beach - Why Miami's Coconut Grove is booming

Miami’s oceanfront neighborhoods may grab international attention, but other parts of town offer as much appeal. The entire city is booming with development, says Jaclyn Bild, a broker associate with Douglas Elliman who was born and brought up in Miami. “The beating heart of Miami is now on the mainland, whereas before it was all about the Beach,” she says. “Neighborhoods that have been around forever are transforming into trend centers, and others are burgeoning for the first time.”

Dry Season - How resorts and wineries are adapting their programs to attract nondrinking visitors

Resort and Spa in Napa, California, it has always been about wine—with a location just minutes from top wineries, a restaurant with an extensive wine list, and rooms looking out over working vineyards. Since its opening in 2006, it has been inherently clear that this hotel caters largely to oenophiles. But after a twoyear $25 million renovation completed earlier this year, there have been a few notable additions to the premises: new rooms, a refreshed lobby and expanded bar, as well as a newfound emphasis on speaking to a sober or sober-curious audience.
