Switching Health Insurer also termed as portability, wherein it allows the policyholder to carry forward the continuity benefits accrued on the previous policy provided by the previous insurer. These benefits are earned by the course of continuous coverage for a certain period of time. This continuous coverage is essential in availing coverage for the pre-existing disease. Portability can also be done in order to take up an individual policy by porting into it from a group health insurance policy or a family floater policy.
Things to remember before planning to switch:
1. Policy Type: You can only port within the similar health insurance policies form different insurer i.e. From top-up plan to top-up plan of a different insurance provider. & family as well as individual policies can be ported
2. Renewal: Portability gets denied if there is a break in the policy, hence porting should be done before the existing cover expires.
3. Intimation Time: Send the application to port your insurance at least 45 days before the expiry of your existing health policy to ensure that the application is accepted.
4. Porting Charges: Health insurance portability does not involve any porting charges.
