What is driving consumers to become more conscious of what they eat?

Consumer shopping behavior has fundamentally changed, especially those pertaining to eating choices. A high level of mindfulness about health and the environment is evident in the current consumer trend.

A majority of consumers are interested in understanding the ingredients used in the products that they buy. It is not surprising anymore that consumers are becoming increasingly mindful of their food choices.

Although conscious consumerism, a.k.a. ethical or green consumerism, dates back to the 1970s, it is a trend that has been growing more and more popular by the day. Not only is the food industry but consumer behavior too is also evolving rapidly.

There is also high demand for transparency as consumers are keen on knowing and understanding the ingredients that go into their comfort food. People have not only started reading the back of packages now but are also seeking simplicity alongside quality. We are now seeing a lot of innovative products with shorter ingredient lists that people can really pronounce.

With consumers becoming more health-conscious, retailers have also started making shifts in their own merchandising and marketing to keep up with the trend. And the rise in demand for foods that help people stay healthy has led to a boom for the so-called functional food products.
