India On Liugong's Radar As Export Hub For Excavators

LiuGong is a Chinese company. What sort of a presence does it have in India?

Liugong is a 60-year-old group and a multinational. There are 17 plants in China, a plant each in Brazil, Poland and in India, at Pithampur, Indore, to be precise. We had started this plant in 2009.

What does the Indore plant manufacture?

At present, the Indore plant manufactures wheel loaders ranging from 2 tons to 3 tons, 4, tons, 5 tons and 7 tons. We also manufacture 150 HP graders. That apart, we also manufacture 21 tons and 15 tons excavators here. It has a capacity to manufacture 3,000 units per annum.

Which products are you present in, within India?

Liugong is predominantly known for its wheel loaders in India. And graders too. We have a 20 percent market share in India in wheel loaders and in the 5 tons of wheel loaders, from where mining starts, we are the No.1 for the last nine years in India. Our market share is 45 percent if you take into account the 5 ton class of wheel loaders.

In motor graders, we are No.2 in India as per Off-Highway report.

How big is this market for wheel loaders in India?

If you compare the wheel loader markets in India and China, then there is a huge difference. The market size for wheel loaders in India is about 4,000 units per annum.

Are there any plans to expand the business or enter new categories of products?
