Sunny Kaushal’s debut film, Sunshine Music Tours And Travels (2016), which revolved around the Sunburn Festival, may not have worked at the box-office. But that didn’t cause a dent in his confidence. He moved to the web world with Official Chukyagiri in the same year. Playing the character of Spandan Chukya, he won much popularity. Then Akshay Kumar’s sports drama, Gold (2018), gave Sunny the exposure he deserved. The film was based on the real story of India’s first Gold win at the Olympics. Kaushal played the character of Himmat Singh and emerged a winner.
He bagged his first lead role in Bhangra Paa Le, directed by Sneha Taurani. The actor played a dual role in the dance film opposite Shriya Pilgaonkar and Rukshar Dhillon. While the film was a dud, Kabir Khaan zeroed in on him to star in the hi-profile series, The Forgotten Army: Azaadi Ke Liye opposite Sharvari. It spotlighted Subhash Chandra Bose’s Azad Hind Fauj or Indian National Army (INA), which was instrumental in India’s freedom struggle. The series won Sunny much applause.
His father, action director Sham Kaushal, was part of the team too. He says his dad behaved formally with him on the set. He expected nothing less from the professional artiste. “I was an assistant (to Ali Abbas Zafar) on Gunday (2014), while dad was the action director. He was strict back then as well. He never went easy on us. In fact, you can check with Vicky (Kaushal) how dad was with him in Zubaan,” smiles Sunny.
