<div style="page-break-before:always; page-break-after:always">An international research team claims the biological age of a person&rsquo;s retinas &mdash; the thin membrane behind the eyeball containing millions of light-sensitive cells &mdash; appears to be connected to their risk of death over the next decade.In the study, nearly 47,000 adults between 40 and 69 years old had scans on the back surface of their eyes. Researchers utilized a computer-based artificial intelligence system to analyze the health of the tiny blood vessels in their retinas. The tool helped them determine if subjects were &ldquo;fast agers,&rdquo; biologically speaking, and participants were monitored for 11 years.The scientists explain individuals who initially showed a &ldquo;retinal age&rdquo; older than their chronological age displayed an annual 2 percent increase in their risk for death from any cause and a 3 percent jump for specific causes, such as heart disease, dementia or cancer. The team also reports their life expectancy estimates had an overall accuracy to within 3.5 years.<div style="page-break-before:always; page-break-after:always">Experts say the discovery could lead to simple routine screening for life-threatening conditions.&ldquo;The retina offers a unique, accessible &lsquo;window&rsquo; to evaluate underlying pathological processes of systemic vascular and neurological diseases,&rdquo; explains study co-author Dr. Mingguang He, of the Center for Eye Research Australia.He adds retinal microvasculature seems particularly sensitive to &ldquo;the cumulative damages of aging, which increase the mortality risk.&rdquo;
