She's making a habit of stealing the spotlight. After performing her new hit song “Ghost Story" on the Grammys stage and winning the night's Best Roots Gospel Album prize for My Savior on April 3, Carrie Underwood picked up a mic to sing the single again at the April 11 CMT Music Awards, where she and Jason Aldean collected two trophies for their duet "If I Didn't Love You.” By her side at each event? Husband Mike Fisher – who reportedly called himself his wife's "official purse holder" during the latter show.
"Everyone was praising and fawning over Carrie at the CMTs and Mike couldn't seem to get a word in edgewise. He felt like a spare part, and it really got to him," reveals an insider. "Someone even mistook Mike as a waiter and asked him for a cocktail because he was lingering by the bar alone in a suit while Carrie was off networking. He was beyond mortified.”
Though Carrie and Mike might have been smiling on the red carpet at both the Grammys and the CMTs, "that's a carefully curated public image,” alleges the insider.
“She puts on a happy show for the cameras, but there's a lot going on behind the scenes. If you ask people who know them, they'll say that Carrie and Mike's 11-year marriage is far from picture-perfect. The truth is they've had issues for years."
A HISTORY OF DRAMA
The pair have led completely separate lives at times, says the insider. Carrie, 39, was often focused on motherhood, recording or touring, while Mike, 41, traveled for hockey games ahead of his 2018 NHL retirement.
Three miscarriages, clashing lifestyles – she's more liberal and a vegetarian, he's deeply conservative and hunts - and Carrie's horrific 2017 fall, which left her with a broken wrist and more than 40 stitches in her face, only amped up the stress.
