After an unarmed black man called George Floyd was allegedly murdered in Minneapolis by white police officer Derek Chauvin, President Donald Trump said it was “a tragedy”. How dare he?
It wasn’t a tragedy. It was a racist killing. Police officer Chauvin knelt on George’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds while three police officers looked on. George screamed, “I can’t breathe!” until he died.
The tragedy is that this is still happening in 2020. Half a century after Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights Movement, and racism is alive and is shamefully flourishing in powerful institutions all over the world.
America is on fire because we are angry. Because it wasn’t a “tragedy”, it was just the latest sickening display of police racial violence in America, where one in every 1,000 black males can expect to die at the hands of officers of the law.
