ACTRESS CAREY MULLIGAN ON HER CHILDHOOD MAKING THE MOST OF LOCKDOWN AND HER MISSION TO CHANGE THE STIGMA AROUND ALZHEIMER’S
ALAN TANNER
‘GROWING UP IN HOTELS WAS LIKE A FAIRYTALE'
She’s known for her starring roles in Hollywood blockbusters such as The Great Gatsby alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Drive with Ryan Gosling, but it’s Carey Mulligan’s latest flick, Promising Young Woman, that has the critics falling over themselves. The black comedy thriller, which was curated by Emerald Fennell, one of the writers behind Killing Eve, follows the story of two women and explores tough subjects such as rape, suicide and revenge.

“I think it is very timely as a film,” Carey tells us. “It’s not a horror, but it’s something close to it.”

Away from Tinseltown, the 35-year-old Brit is a homebody at heart, and has spent lockdown in the West Country with her husband, Mumford & Sons frontman Marcus Mumford, and their two children, Evelyn, five, and Wilfred, three.

Here, Carey lifts the lid on the importance of the movie, her very different upbringing and why spreading awareness of Alzheimer’s disease is a cause so close to her heart...

How have you coped with life in this weird new world of lockdowns?

I’ve spent lockdown in the West Country, thankfully, with space around me. I felt very lucky to be in a place with a garden and lots of space for the kids. People have had a nightmare in so many different ways, and we have been lucky enough to have a nice time to spend together as a family. We feel really fortunate.

In normal times, you often head out on the road with Marcus and your family. How much of a challenge is it to raise children on tour?
