If you aren’t familiar with Beanie Feldstein yet, it’s time to rectify that immediately. The hilarious 27-year-old actress – who has been hailed as the next Lena Dunham and has already been called an “icon” by Jameela Jamil – first arrived on the scene with small roles in films such as Bad Neighbours 2 and Lady Bird. But it was her leading lady turn in 2017’s coming-of-age flick Booksmart that truly cemented her status as one to watch. Her role as high school nerd Molly saw her nominated for a Golden Globe Award.
A gift for comedy clearly runs in the family as Beanie’s brother is none other than The Wolf Of Wall Street star Jonah Hill. “Jonah and I are inseparable best friends,” she tells us. “We’ve never competed. We’re too obsessed with each other for that.”
Here, Beanie – who is currently starring in the movie adaptation of novel How To Build A Girl – talks about her time in Broadway and growing up with Jonah...
You play a teenager from Wolverhampton in your new movie, How To Build A Girl. How did you tackle the accent?
I went to Wolverhampton to research the accent. I lived there and worked there for a while. I worked in a local shop called Shop In The Square, where 25 local female artists sell their work in a co-operative style. It’s mostly gifts, like cards, jewellery, mugs and things like that. I got all these different perspectives on growing up in Wolverhampton. I’m still in their Facebook group.
