It’s knives out as cooking competition series Ishushu asks who’s the best cook in the family, Mondays on Moja Love (*157) at 18:00. Bring out a mom and ask her to choose which of her twins made it better? Yikes! Husband versus wife? You know it’s going to get hot in the kitchen! You’ll see real South African flavour – dishes so familiar to us that we know how they should be made perfectly, and we’d be willing to fight you on it. The fancy-fancy presentation might say that the lamb chops went to Harvard, or the chicken feet went to UCT, but the flavour had better come from the heart.
Ishushu is a celebration of home cooking and a reminder of why learning to cook and passing on those skills is so important for all South Africans. On that note, we asked the show’s lovely host Dineo Ranaka about her three favourite home-cooked meals. Read on as she talks about the elusive ingredients that make home cooking so very special.
