<div style="page-break-before: always; page-break-after: always;">WE KNEW AMD was going to go hybrid&mdash; it&rsquo;s the obvious next step in processor development that Intel and Apple have already made. We now have confirmation from AMD&rsquo;s Chief Technology Officer, Mark Papermaster. AMD has done well with its tactic of throwing as many cores at a processor as it can. The Zen core was good, but it was the Zen 2 with its 16 cores that lit a fire under Intel, which has since staged a comeback with its hybrid big.little designs of Alder Lake and Raptor Lake.The Phoenix 2 APU is expected to be the first application of a hybrid design, with two performance cores and four efficiency cores. Unlike Intel, AMD will use the Zen 4 architecture for both the efficiency and performance cores. The former, dubbed Zen 4C, will have less cache, slower clocks, and a profile tuned for low-power applications. Mobile application are where hybrid designs can count, and the Steam Deck 2 is already on board. AMD has also said it won&rsquo;t be dropping the big 16 core desktop processors. Zen 5 is expected to retain the basic outline of the Zen 4, but switching to a 3nm process from 5nm.AMD is doing well at the moment, with its market share of the x86 market creeping up since Zen first appeared in 2017. It had around 20 percent of the desktop market, a long way from the heights of 2005, when it briefly managed parity in the desktop market. In the first quarter of 2023, AMD has pulled back to 34.6 percent of the x86 processor market, according to Mercury Research. Before Team Red aficionados get too exited, that includes embedded applications, where AMD&rsquo;s efforts have been rewarded. The PlayStation and Xbox both run AMD silicon, for a start. If these are taken out of the equation then AMD has 17.2 percent&mdash;still respectable, but matching or getting close to toppling Intel remains a massive undertaking.
