Wonders of our Woodland
Buckinghamshire Life|March 2017

Walking, wildlife, battling pollution and a boost for the economy, writes christopher anstey, chairman of the cla’s buckinghamshire branch.

Wonders of our Woodland

IN the UK, we have 3.16 million hectares of woodland, according to latest figures from the Forestry Commission, equivalent to almost 10 times the area of our two counties put together. Forests, woods and trees are a defining part of our landscape, but also have an important role in protecting it. Trees slow water runoff and increase water absorption; they prevent soil erosion, alleviate flooding and improve water quality.

Their vital contribution to mitigating climate change should also not be underestimated. In the same way that permanent deforestation is one of the greatest contributors to carbon emissions, so afforestation by land and woodland owners is one of the most effective ways of sequestering carbon.

Trees are an important source of construction materials and renewable energy.
