&nbsp;I&nbsp;took&nbsp;up&nbsp;bead&nbsp;working&nbsp;as a hobby in order to&nbsp;pass the time during the long cold winters here on the Prairies. Luckily, there were some ladies from my church who were willing to teach me. We&rsquo;d gather on Sundays after church and, during my lesson, enjoy some tea and a treat&mdash;my friend&rsquo;s bannock was the best, especially with butter and strawberry jam! Each time we met, I&rsquo;d learn something new, such as how to bead something completely different, or how to correct a mistake.The basic tools needed for beading include beading needles, which are thinner than regular sewing needles, and a spool of beading thread, which is strong&mdash;similar to dental floss&mdash;and&nbsp;doesn&rsquo;t break easily.<img src="http://magarticles.magzter.com/articles/9646/251452/5a04353f71d13/1510225131210.jpg"" owidth=323 oheight=501" style="width:300px" />The first item I learned to bead was a BIC pen case for my mom that I was able to personalize. I had to start over six times, but my teachers were gracious and assured me that I did better than most who were just starting out. After many weeks, I was able to complete it and my mom loved it.Next, I beaded a BIC lighter case, which I also personalized. Unfortunately, no other brands of pens or lighters would fit these handcrafted cases!The most difficult item I&rsquo;ve created so far is a beaded dream catcher. The pen and lighter cases were easy compared to this project!To begin with, it required a three-inch metal hoop, which was pretty simple to complete. Beading the&nbsp;centre&nbsp;was more difficult and finally, adding the tassels on the bottom was the hardest part of all! I had to start over so many times to ensure that the tassels lined up, it was very frustrating. I never gave up though, and after quite some time, I finished my masterpiece. I gave it as a gift to my youngest son, who absolutely adores it.For the longest time, my friends supplied all the materials necessary to complete my projects. After our gatherings came to an end, however, I discovered where to purchase the necessary supplies and have continued beading on my own ever since. Although it&rsquo;s a very time-consuming hobby, the end result is worth it.
