India's Best Universities 2023

The Careers360 database of degree-awarding institutes had grown from 1,190 institutions to 1,262 by February 2023. This year, we shortlisted close to 800 for in-depth analysis. The shortlisting criteria are based on literature search on internationally indexed publications, Elsevier’s Scopus and Clarivate Analytics Web of Science. This year, we have also considered institutions that have had a minimum of 10 publications in the last three years, January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2022. For these, we considered citations per paper, H-index, IPR and activities, and aggregate publications. In the case of IP activity, we have also assigned weightage to research agreements between institution and corporations.

We have given more weightage accreditations such as National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) scores, granted to just 387 universities as per the latest list. Apart from that, students, faculties, infrastructure, residential facilities, annual budgets, and student diversity were also parameters. For residential facilities, we considered the latest All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) data; where details were not available, we used previous years’ average.

A total of 100 public and 35 private institutions have been ranked in the “Overall” category. These include private deemed-to-be and private state universities.

Moreover, in the domain-specific rankings, 665 institutions have been ranked across 11 segments, some of which have private and public institutions listed separately. For the management section, we considered only the Indian Institutes of Management; although some Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have highly-regarded management departments, we have excluded them from this category.
