Thrilling Experience Of Becoming A Kgpian

It was the first day of the month of December. More than 1500 students were in the academic complex in formal attire preparing for the day one interview. And this was just the beginning of the illustrious career path of the students of IIT Kharagpur - the KGPians.

Students’ aspirations

Our graduates start their career with top Indian and international organizations, national labs in defence space and atomic sciences, design houses, engineering conglomerates, consulting companies, financial institutions and so on. Some of them take time off to prepare for the nation’s premier civil service examinations. About 10-15 percent of our graduates opt for higher studies in India and abroad right after graduation while many do so after earning a few years of work experience.

Those going for management programmes join the Indian Institutes of Management. Others go for PhD studies mostly in top universities such as Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Purdue, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Rice, UCB, Warwick, Imperial College, Melbourne etc. A sizeable fraction of our own PhD degree recipients go on to take up postdoctoral fellowships around the world or join educational institutions, including other IITs as faculty members.

Quality of graduates

You will see every year about 250 top global companies visit the IIT Kharagpur campus and recruit more than 1600 students. What draws these much coveted corporate giants is simply the quality of graduates of IIT Kharagpur. From the day the young aspirants walk in to the Institute, they are groomed relentlessly through academic and professional training to excel in the careers of their choice.

Academics and grooming are dynamic activities at the Institute which have evolved over the decades. While the faculty experts explore new methods of teaching, the administration conceptualizes new programs and flexible modes of study.
