Why We Need To Get People To Read The Bible
Direction Magazine|February 2017

It is widely claimed that the Bible is not relevant to modern life, so is it reasonable to believe it? Recently-appointed Elim national evangelist Mark Greenwood explores this important question.

Why We Need To Get People To Read The Bible

For many years the most common objection to the Bible was that it had been changed. Currently, the more common objection is that it hasn’t changed!

The Bible is often seen as outdated and irrelevant, so trying to convince people that the Bible is God’s Word for humanity is a big step. It is for this reason, I believe, the best approach is an apologetic on why it’s worth a read.

I have confidence in the power of the Bible… we just need to get people reading it. I know many who have come to faith by doing so. So I use the following as a starter:

It agrees with science

There is a misconception that the Bible and science are opposites, the implication being that the Bible disagrees so it’s wrong. This is flawed logic as science commonly disagrees with science, so which bit do we believe? It’s also factually incorrect. Some of the greatest scientists have been Christians: Newton, Boyle, Faraday, Pasteur, Keplin, Copernicus and Galileo, to name a few.

It’s also worth noting that the Bible references many things thousands of years before science ‘discovered’ them.

The earth Because of telescopes and space travel we know the earth is circular and is “suspended in space.” (Job 26:7) “He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth.” (Isaiah 40:22)

The ocean We used to think the sea was saucer shaped i.e. deepest in the middle. But in the early 1900s, oceanographers discovered that the sea had many valleys or canyons and mountains. “…valleys of the seas.” (Psalm 18:15) “…mountains of the seas.” (Jonah 2:6)
