IT’S becoming ever easier to grow a healthier diet. When I started gardening fresh lettuces were just full ‘butter’ heads of soft leaves, and these were almost the only acceptable option available.

This type of lettuce needed rich, moist soil to grow and careful nurturing to be succulent and sweet.

Then icebergs arrived, lettuces with a crunchy, almost pure-white, heart. But these were yet more demanding and even harder to grow well.
