NEARLY 15 years have passed since creosote was banned from sale in the EU. Love it or hate it, this coal tar-based preservative was great at extending the life of Britain’s fences and sheds, but its cancer-causing ingredients were too dangerous to ignore.

Then its successor, creosote substitute, disappeared from shelves in 2009 because of similar concerns. So what are the options to protect your wood from the ravages of winter?
