ALL good gardeners start to plan&nbsp;for a colourful spring now. As there is so much choice at nurseries and garden centres I decided to set myself a colour theme before I made my selection. For my larger pots, I&rsquo;ve gone for an orange with Tulipa &lsquo;Brown Sugar&rsquo; at the heart of the displays. Then the smaller pots will be for blues with Muscari &lsquo;Valerie Finnis&rsquo; and some blue hyacinths.To ensure a display of spring bulbs that goes on and on for over a month I am planting more than one layer of bulbs in each pot. This is often referred to as a lasagne planting (three layers is the maximum I have ever tried). So in my smaller blue themed pots, I&rsquo;ve planted hyacinths in the bottom layer and muscari on the top.When planting a lasagne pot put the larger and later bulbs in the bottom. The middle layer is the place for mid-season bulbs, such as narcissi, and the top is ideal for the earlier and smaller bulbs. Crocus and muscari are perfect here.Your bulbs will be planted deeper than normal but don&rsquo;t let this concern&nbsp;you &ndash; they will just flower slightly later. By planting in layers, you will have a relay of colour over many weeks. And if space is an issue in your garden this is a wonderful way of growing as many bulbs as possible.
