This is sometimes very formal, as in a gallery or academic setting, but may also be very casual. It is based on an artist&rsquo;s description of how they work, and why. It should answer basic questions that most viewers have, though they may be too polite or too shy to ask them, such as: &ldquo;What is the artist trying to do? Why are they doing it?&rdquo;Some people argue that a picture should speak for itself &ndash; and in many ways it can. But often an artist statement is required &ndash; as in a grant application. At other times it may be optional, but can&nbsp;add to the power of an image or a project. An artist statement cannot argue a weak project into being a strong one, but it can expand upon a well-photographed project and add depth and dimension.<img class="img1-thumbnail" src="http://magarticles.magzter.com/articles/2777/227646/59660c379ab9a/page431499860010.jpg"" owidth=454 oheight=402" style="margin:5px; position:relative" />A statement should be no longer than necessary, and should be written in conversational English, avoiding academic language (unless academic arguments are specifically asked for, as in a university setting).I have had the pleasure of publishing over 500 artist statements on my blog over the past six years. The most effective ones are short and written from the heart, and explain what the artist is doing and why.&nbsp;
